Sao Tome and Principe

TRI’s project in Sao Tome and Principe (STP) represents a significant step forward in the country’s efforts to restore degraded forests and landscapes, which have been heavily impacted by agricultural expansion and other land uses. With one-third of the nation’s forests converted to plantations, the project aims to restore 35,500 hectares, impacting over one-third of STP’s land area. This ambitious initiative involves the establishment of a Forest and Landscape Restoration (FLR) platform, which brings together diverse stakeholders, including government agencies, local communities, and the private sector, to guide and promote restoration activities. The project also focuses on enhancing the capacity of local institutions to manage and monitor restoration efforts, ensuring that they are implemented effectively and sustainably. In addition to ecological restoration, the project supports the development of sustainable livelihoods for local communities, including agroforestry and ecotourism initiatives. By restoring degraded lands and promoting sustainable land use practices, the project aims to enhance the resilience of STP’s ecosystems and improve the well-being of its people.
